2nd Grade Courses

Students learn and explore factors that affect a healthy lifestyle. Students learn to:

  • Demonstrate physical fitness
  • Display fundamentals of team work

Students have the opportunity to develop their God-given talents of creating and performing in the arts.

  • Art: Students have the opportunity to express themselves in various art forms and develop an appreciation for art.
  • Music: Students have the opportunity to participate in music activities and develop an appreciation for music

Students study, retain and use information from a variety of sources. Students learn to:

  • Navigate applications
  • Recognize basic technology components, log on using a user name, password and save work
  • Produce simple products
  • Practice internet safety
  • Demonstrate proper care of device

Students have the opportunity to develop a foundation in the study of a world language. Students learn to:

  • Use target language to communicate
  • Study country & culture of target language people

Students learn through stories, activities, Scripture, prayer, discussion and reflection about their Catholic faith. Catholic teachings are discussed and integrated in all subject areas. The focus is on:

  • Church Teachings
  • Celebrating Liturgy
  • Liturgical experiences/seasons
  • Sacraments: Reconciliation & First Eucharist
  • Prayer
  • Lives of the saints

Students will learn that all are called to holiness. As a family, that means we gather as a Catholic Faith Community on weekends to give praise and worship to God by attending Mass.

Students acquire math skills through the use of hands-on experiences, technology and Diocesan Standards. Activities include:

  • Adding & subtracting fluently
  • Two-digit addition and subtraction
  • Multiplication
  • Place value
  • Measurement
  • Works with time & money
  • Data interpretation & representation
  • Work with geometric shapes & their attributes
  • Problem solving

Reading and literature, as in all truths, are best presented through the perspective of our Catholic faith. these standards are directed toward fostering students’ understanding and working knowledge of reading, from the alphabetic principle to comprehension of complex literacy and informational text. Skills include:

  • Phonic skills
  • Spelling
  • Vocabulary
  • Guided and independent reading
  • Fluency
  • Comprehension

Writing – Speaking – Listening

The language art skills of writing, speaking and listening are used as the communication vehicle for the search for the truth, beauty and goodness. This will increase sophistication in all aspects of  language. Skills include:

  • Writing using 6+1 Traits
  • Using conventions of Standard English
  • Speaking
  • Listening

Science is the study of interdependent relationships in our earth’s systems. It fosters and appreciation for God’s Creation and the good of socitey. Students use hands-on activities to explore science in the world around them. They learn through observing, predicting, questioning and explaining. The focus is on:

  • Life science
  • Physical/Space science
  • Earth/Space science
  • Engineering/Technology
  • Investigating & experiencing

Social Studies is the study of society and the relationship of individual members within society. The focus is on:

  • Awareness of local & world communities
  • Relationships among communities
  • Meeting needs through goods and services
  • Modeling active participation in weekend Mass, daily prayer and service
  • Showing an interest in homework and school activities
  • Providing a quiet place and sufficient uninterrupted time to do school work
  • Encouraging good nutrition, rest and exercise
  • Maintaining positive/supportive communication with the school
